Becoming the CEO of your own design.

"I feel like I'm failing to be a CEO"

These were the exact words my client said to me on a call this week. My heart sank when I saw the disappointment on her face.

She felt like she had failed—like she wasn’t measuring up to what she thought a CEO should be.

When I asked her why she felt this way, she admitted she wasn’t bringing in big money, hitting massive results, or seeing a waitlist of clients. There were no viral social media posts, no overwhelming flood of inquiries. “I feel like I should be doing more,” she said. “I’m not making bold moves, so I don’t feel like a CEO.”

I asked if she had noticed any movement in her business since stepping into her CEO role. She paused, then said, “Yes.”

And that’s the point I want to share with you today.

When we hear CEO mode—a term I use often—we assume it looks a certain way: big, bold, fast-moving. But here’s what we don’t talk about enough: CEO mode is yours to define. And how you see your role as a CEO is shaped by:

  •  Your past experiences
If you’ve come from a corporate background, you might view CEO mode through the lens of high-pressure targets and deadlines. But if that environment drained you, stepping into your CEO role with the same mindset might feel overwhelming instead of empowering.
  •  Your current situation
Maybe you have young children, and the traditional idea of being a high-energy, always-on CEO just doesn’t fit your reality. That doesn’t mean you’re doing it wrong—it means you’re doing it your way.
  • Your business habits
If you’ve been running your business like a hobby—sporadic, unstructured, hoping for the best—shifting into a strategic, systemised approach might feel daunting at first. But that doesn’t mean you can’t grow into it.

Here’s what I want you to know:
None of this determines whether or not you’re a CEO. What matters is how you choose to step into that role.

  • It’s tweaking that fun reel you want to post without worrying if it’ll go viral—your business, your rules.
  • It’s setting no-work boundaries when your kids get home—your business, your rules.
  • It’s prioritising your morning walk because you know a clear mind makes for better decisions—your business, your rules.

CEO mode isn’t about making massive, flashy moves. It’s about the small, intentional actions that compound over time. Your business, your way.

You don’t need to make bold, drastic moves. You don’t need to throw huge amounts of money into marketing campaigns. And you definitely don’t need to work every hour under the sun. What truly makes a difference are small, consistent actions that compound over time. When you step into your CEO role with intention, you create a strategy that supports sustainable growth. This is your business—you're the captain, and you set the course.
